36 Eggs

How many days does it take a family of six to use 36 eggs? I remember days when I’d buy a dozen eggs, and they’d last forever. Eventually, I graduated to buying 36 eggs because they were cheaper that way and we had four kids so we’d eat them before they went bad. But, now…how long does 36 eggs last? Assume for this task that no one breaks any eggs or feeds them to the dog, or bakes for a get together. Take into account that I don’t make eggs for the family breakfast. How long would they last? Would you guess three weeks? Or maybe two weeks? How about even one week? Those guesses would all be wrong. 36 eggs lasted 4 ½ days. Yes, that’s 60 hours! That’s more than one egg every two hours. Maybe we should buy chickens—but that would take a lot of chickens. Well, at least eggs are cheap protein…don’t even get me started on how much milk Luke and Jacob can drink in a week.

  1. Hey, wait! Before you rant and rave, remember, I did use four of those eggs for the coffee cakes. Still, that's only a measley four out of 36.

Anyways, what do you mean, don't get you started on milk? It's not like we go through more than 36 gallons of milk! :)

  2. Oh I just had this great idea! We can be like the Farnons (from All Creatures Great and Small), and get a dozen or so guinea hens! Yeah! Only, we'll remember to close the gate...

  4. Although I think you have us beat in the egg department (at least this week), I think we may be neck and neck in the milk department! I blink, and the milk disappears.

  5. In our family 36 eggs are gone in about 2 or 3 days. Milk not as much because I'm the only one who actually drinks it and then the rest we cook with it.

  6. Our milk store knows us. We're the ones keeping them in business. We pretty drink around four gallons of milk in three or two days. "You guys need a cow" was what one man said to us after we exitted the store carrying two gallons each.

  7. Same here. Caleb is the head milk-drinker. Josh is the egg-head. Nathan is yogurt-boy and Sara is miss cottage cheese...
