One Last Party

As I was driving home this morning from dropping off Ariel, I saw a tree whose leaves had begun to color. Though I know it’s early and this means that the tree is under stress, it also reminds me that autumn is around the corner.

Soon the hills and mountains that surround Chattanooga will be painted yellow, scarlet, and maroon. It’s like the trees are having one last party before they go to sleep for the winter. It means soon I’ll be sipping hot apple cider at night, snuggling under wool blankets, and enjoying chrysanthemum blooms. And it means I begin the wait to see snowflakes dancing in the air.

We don’t get much snow here in southeastern Tennessee, but just enough to have spontaneous city-wide holidays that make the wait for Thanksgiving and Christmas seem shorter.

But it’s still 90 degrees during the days, and I’m soaking in the warmth and telling myself that I’ll miss it in January. I looked out the window and saw a yellow leaf fluttering in the breeze. Sigh. Maybe fall is closer than I think.

  1. I can't wait for fall...that crispness in the air is the most wonderful feeling every, especially refreshing after a long summer.

  2. Fall is definitely in the air and even though I cling to summer with bloody fingernails, I do LOVE autumn. But last winter was so cold and long, I'm drinking in every minute of warm sunshine!

  3. It will be in the mid to upper 90's all this week here in NC. I will be so happy to see the temperatures drop into the high 50's & low 60's. Then I can spend more time outside with my soon to be 2 year old puppy. I love the greenery and life but am about ready for some frost to put my grass to sleep for the winter.

  4. Hmmm, yes, but while this is going on, some of us will be learning what the difference is between Alkanes and Alkenes. Aside from the vowel, of course.

  5. I love the Winter... And I hate the Summer. I'm very opposed to the heat, and I have no love for sun, sand, or insects. Autumn is the transition between the two seasons, which allows me to enjoy a few brief moments of warm before seasons of cold come pouring in.

But with that all aside... Is it AUTUMN or FALL?

  6. When I wake up with icy cold feet, I know fall is in the air. The leaves will soon change here, as well. Right now, we have a riot of wild sunflowers instead.

  7. Fall has arrived, my friend! School's in, and even if the weather hasn't broken yet, that means it's fall. At least for me.
