Zombie Pandemic

I don’t get the whole zombie fascination. What is it about bloody semi-dead humans? I mean they’re not really scary—they seem incapable of rational thought. So even if there was a zombie apocalypse, it doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to defeat them. Of course, the whole undead-so-you-can’t-kill-them thing does make it a bit hard. But it seems to me that it wouldn’t be too hard to round them up a la the Pied Piper routine and take them out. I’m guessing that zombies are susceptible to RPGs. Once they are separated from their entrails, I’m guessing they’re a done deal. (That might be too gory, but I’ve got boys in the house so entrails are a hot topic.)

Jake and Matt are fascinated by zombies. Jake has made a zombie game, which is actually pretty fun since it’s a competitive/cooperative game and the only way you can survive the zombie onslaught is to work together. Matt draws murals on our big white board of the zombie apocalypse. Just when I thought my boys were getting too obsessed, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) put out a Preparedness 101 novella, Zombie Pandemic. Yep, find out how you too can survive the Zombie Pandemic. Click here. The art is pretty impressive.

  1. LOL, I get where you're coming from on the zombies. They're not my favorite creepy thing, but I think they're fun sometimes. I think the fascination comes from what they represent - from consumerism to mob mentality to fear of plague, etc. etc. I think they're fascinating and frightening because they're US at our basest and worst. Unlike other once-human monsters, they have no semblance of mind or reasoning left - not even a true survival instinct because they will come at you even at great risk to themselves. They're all hunger and violence.

Anyway, that got long. Happy Halloween! :)

  2. Is the game The Last Night on Earth? I just played that recently! It definitely is fun, and I like board games where you play as a team and not just individuals.

I, too, am unreasonably obsessed with zombies. One time I butt dialed my husband and we later listened to a conversation we had in the car (10 minutes recorded) where I went on and on about different types of zombies and what we would actually do if we had a zombie apocalypse.

  3. Zombies? Just get yourself some incendiary shotgun rounds. No zombie on earth can eat you if it's burnt to a crisp.

  4. In the spirit of full disclosure...the hubby and I celebrated Halloween by watching The Walking Dead episodes we saved for the occasion. Zombies are our guilty pleasure (along with episodes of REVENGE and X-Factor. LOL) :)

    Happy Halloween!

  5. Whenever I read RPG I first think, "role-playing game." So "Zombies are susceptible to RPGs" reads as "we could distract zombies for hours if we give them a Dungeons and Dragons game. Won't see them for a week at least."
