Becoming Part of a Book

Okay, it's your chance to say something. Several years ago, I read a book called The Eyre Affair. To make a complicated story short, let's just say a "real person" was able to read themselves into a book--to become part of the world of books.

Let's say you could do it. And, leaving out the Bible, what book would you want to be in? And why?

I guess I should start. Nope, it wouldn't be one of my own books because I can live there already. I'd love to say Persuasion, but I've worn one of those dresses--yuck. I'd like to try out one of the Harry Potter books, but I'm a bit of a whimp and would prefer not to face Voldemort unless I had to. So, honestly, I'd probably read myself into Haroun and the Sea of Stories. It's absurd, ironic, and gut-bustingly funny.

What about you? I look forward to reading your thoughts in the comments section.

p.s. Thanks to Nathan Bransford who had the idea.

  1. I'd read myself into The Lord of the Rings. What other book could be better?

  2. I would pick Percy Jackson and the Olympans . Why? Becouse it would be cool to have one of those powers.

  3. OK, since you used Haroun, I'm going to have to come up with something else. Humph.

Well, I guess Jasper Fforde's The Well of Lost Plots would be a close second because, like Haroun and the Sea of Stories, it's absurd, creative, and hilarious.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is also a great book, but not one that it would be pleasant to be in. (I mean, really, CREEPY Mrs. Danvers and the "ghost" of a crazy lady are not really my idea of pleasant, even if they do make an awesome novel.)

  4. I'm with Matthew, Half-blood camp is for me. Otherwise, it would be fun to be a part of 100 Cupboards or Animal Farm. Or maybe Frankenstein, gosh, so many good books....

  5. Oh, definitely Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series. I basically want to be Valentine, Ender's sister, and follow Ender to alien worlds, live thousands of earth-years, meet lots of interesting people, and save the world one hostile alien species at a time. Sweet.

  6. I think I would like to be in "The Magician's Nephew" by C.S. Lewis. I am fascinated by the pool/doorway to different worlds. But I would love to have been there to hear Aslan sing the creation song.

  7. I think that I would like to be in a P.G. Wodehouse book. I mean, getting to be rich in the 1920s? And randomly get engaged all the time? Sounds like fun to me. :)
Alternatively, I'd like to be in Lord of the Rings or a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery by Dorothy Sayers (just not as the dead body).

  8. Yeah, I seriously thought of Sayers too. But, if you can't be Harriet Vane...then all you can do is pine.

  9. Hohum. I'd rather not write myself into a book, as I'm actually quite content without such an action. But if I had to, I think it would be fun to be in "Lord of the Rings."

Of course, there would always be so much conflict in such a world.. Maybe I should be written into a children's book where there is no danger in anyway... Heh heh.

Oh!! I know!! Somebody should write a biography about me which I would promptly be written into!!

  10. I'm with Karin...flashy 1920s, getting engaged all the time, red lipstick, everything. P.G. Wodehouse is the man for that. I have always wanted someone to write a witty dialog for me, because honestly, I haven't got one.

I'd also like to be in an Anne of Green Gables book. I still love those...are people supposed to grow out of them?
