Friday Five

Today’s Friday Five is movie lines. Not the greatest ones like “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Or insanely stupid ones like “I like smooth things.” (Anakin Skywalker—in case you don’t remember).

But movie lines that you end up quoting...just because.

1. “Don’t you think that daisies are the friendliest flowers?” from You’ve Got Mail. We have daisies in out garden simply because of that line. It’s actually a dumb line, but I find myself saying it anyway.

2. “Gentlemen, the man who folded this tube of toothpaste isn’t looking for buff.” From Sneakers. Spoken by the female math-genius musician that Robert Redford loves. (Cal is a toothpaste tube folder. He wasn’t looking for buff either. Just saying.)

3. “Hair can’t be healthy, it’s dead.” From Proof spoken by a math genius played by Gwyneth Paltrow (You gotta love those movies about female math geniuses.)

4. “It tis Wednesday, Harold.” From Stranger Than Fiction, spoken by a tolerant semi-crazed Russian woman. (STF is my all time favorite movie, which also has great lines like: “Would that be the letter that begins ‘Dear Imperialist Swine?’” and “’Little did he know?!  I taught a whole class on ‘Little did he know.””)

5. “Plasti-cakes. Made from 100% food-like polymers.” From Buzz Lightyear Saturday morning cartoons. My kids say this on the rare occasion that I serve something that’s not made from scratch.  For example, Me: “We’re having apple-turkey sausages.” Keller inhabitant: “Yum. Made from 100% food-like polymers.”

What about you?  What movie quotes do you find yourself using?

  1. Mine mostly come from TV instead of movies like "I love it when a plan comes together" by Hannibal on the A Team.

  2. One of my friends and I once quoted the entire script from You've Got Mail during a three-hour car ride. In our defense, the person driving us had bought a very large box which he put in the backseat and forced us to share half of one seat. We figured, if we were uncomfortable, he should be too. It worked. (We were teenagers)

    Other favorites:
"I know! The maid's underwear!" from Oscar. Actually, almost any line from Oscar makes for a great quote.

"Had I ever learned, I would be a great expert. And so should Anne!" - Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Pride & Prejudice. My family uses "And so should Anne!" any time someone assumes importance in an area they know nothing about.

My absolute favorite - "I'm not saying she was very silly, but one of us was silly, and it wasn't me." -Wives and Daughters. My husband loves this quote so much I had it printed on a mug for a Christmas present for him!

  3. Gah! I'm lousy at movie quotes! I do however like Helen Keller's famous quote. "While they said it couldn't be done, it was done." Amen!

  4. 1. "He was twitching, that's because he's got my ax imbedded in his nervous system!" The Two Towers, extended version. Gimli explaining to Legolas why an orc corpse is "twitching".
    2. "I'm not left-handed either." The Princess Bride. Westley to Inigo Montoya.
    3. "You want to go home and rethink your life." The Attack of the Clones, Obi-wan Kenobi to a Coruscant lowlife.
    4. "Wana bet I can pull this trigger faster than you can step on the gas?" Numb3rs, not a movie, but that rule has already been broken. Semi-crazy FBI sniper to a criminal attempting to escape.
    5. "In confusion there's profit." Operation Petticoat, Lt. Holden says this before he "scavenges" the base commander's office furniture during an air raid.

  5. The best movie quotes aren't the ones you laugh and chuckle about, but the ones you find yourself spouting in your every day life.

I, for one, find it fairly easy to quote Monty Python.

  6. How about, "Come back here, you bloody coward!" We use that one from time to time, and if I remember right, it was from "History of the World, Part One." (Hilarious movie!)

A couple of other old lines from TV: "Whatchoo talkin' about?" (Different Strokes) and "You got some 'splaining to do!" ("I Love Lucy")

  7. Of course, now that you ask for which ones I use, I can't think of any.

My friends and I used to quote a lot more in high school though. Lots of Star Wars.

  8. Oh gosh...where do i start??

    "Hm, must be Italian."
    Hoodwinked

"We drank, we fought, me made his ancestors proud!"
    Thor

"But she has such well-rounded dipthongs!"
"Thats what got her into this mess!"
Oscar (oh, another good one is: "Heh, that is an oxymoron." "Dr. Poole was right! You are an ox and a moron!")

    "You are a cad!"
"Well, confidentially, you are a bit of a stinker too."
    A Lady Vanishes (old Hitchcock)

This isn't an 'intellectual' quote, but we say it all the time. Its applicable to every agreeable situation: "Solid gold hubcaps!"
    Robin Hood
