Baking Day?

As I troll my favorite blogs, I see beautiful photos of Christmas cookies. Exotic ethnic cookies. Decorated gingerbread men. Or cookies filled with nuts or jam.

I look at the cookies and feel guilty. I haven’t baked a single cookie. I don’t feel sorry for myself, I don’t really like cookies. (I know, everyone tells me I’m crazed.) But I only eat cookies to be polite. The only sweet I eat with regularity is dark chocolate—but that’s not really a sweet, it’s a fourth food group.

But I feel guilty because my kids have no cookies. Shouldn’t they be indulging in cookies during Christmas break?

I can make ethnic cookies. I have a stroopwaffle-izer. Of course, the last time I used it, I had to reset the circuit breakers for the entire house. The electric cookie press was from the Netherlands and the person who rewired it for US current obviously made a mistake.

I won’t be making gingerbread because I hate it. It tastes too much like molasses.

That leaves the cookies filled with nuts or jam. I don’t understand the jam thing. I mean, the bright red jam makes the cookie look pretty, but then it tastes like toast. No jam cookies. Nut cookies. Yeah, I could do those. When I was a kid my mom used to make Russian teacakes every Christmas. I suppose I could do those. Or I could assign one of my four minions to make them. Yeah, I could get “good mom” points without having to bake. Time to rally the minions!

  1. I'm going to try my hand at Russian teacakes today - never done them before, but I'm trying to be brave. Sugar cookies are a favorite at our house - nobody here is too fond of gingerbread, either, but we do like our frosted sugar cookies!

  2. I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but in internet slang "trolling" a blog or website means to leave inflammatory, off-topic, and rude comments to derail a conversation.

My mom doesn't make cookies either. The minions are forced to bake cookies if we want any.

  3. Jini & I went to an ornament exchange/brunch and I made my grandma's date/nut/oatmeal cookies and knox dainties (basically pure sugar with flavoring) to take. I had really good baking intentions. Wayne bought me extra flour and sugar and two bags of coconut. I was picturing mounds of cookies/fudge/truffles/fruitcake...but life has a way of getting in the way and time has been spent in other, needful, ways...so maybe next year.

Normally we all get together the Sunday afternoon before Christmas and makes sugar cookies, but instead we spent the time in E.R. with my mom. Like I said...there's always next year,

At least we won't have lots of goodies left around when we get back to our dieting in January :>)

  4. Thanks, David. So I guess I'm not "trolling." Maybe "visiting." That should work.

  5. David, that's kind of funny. Yeah, I expect Mom's using troll to mean "amble along" or "walk somewhere in a relaxed way." Though perhaps she's hinting that she's actually an ancient Scandinavian creature in disguise.

  6. We don't do cookies either, because we don't have time between all the cakes we bake for two/three birthdays and Christmas.

    :-) We just buy them.

  7. Ha! I can't wait until mine are old enough to get points without having to bake!

I'm terrible. I don't like cakes and I don't really care for cookies, but the dough? Mmm! Must be a texture thing. I just bake them up fast so I don't eat the dough. lol!

My favorite holiday treat? Chex mix. Savory over sweet for the win! And the house smells like Christmas when with Worcestershire sauce simmering on the stove.

  8. I'm more of a pudding girl. It's not Christmas without my mom's bread pudding :)

    Happy holidays, Connie! :D
